šŸ Lesson 1 – Passing & Catching

Our first lesson introduces pupils to the fundamental skills of netball through fun, engaging activities.

Learning focus:

  • Developing accurate passing techniques

  • Exploring effective catching skills

  • Moving into space to receive the ball

  • Understanding basic footwork rules

  • Developing teamwork and communication

Pupils are encouraged to explore passing and catching through progressive practices and modified games, helping them develop confidence and control.

Teaching tip:Ā Encourage pupils to move into space before receiving the ball, and introduce key coaching points gradually rather than overwhelming them with information.

šŸ›”ļø Lesson 2 – Marking & Defending

Our second lesson focuses on developing pupils’ understanding of defending and how to prevent opponents from receiving the ball.

Learning focus:

  • Marking an opponent effectively

  • Maintaining a balanced defensive position

  • Reacting to an opponent’s movement

  • Understanding the 0.9m (3 feet) distance rule when defending a player in possession

  • Developing interception and recovery skills

Pupils learn how to stay close to an opponent when marking them and adjust their positioning appropriately once the opponent receives the ball.

Visual demonstrations support teachers in modelling defensive techniques and highlighting key coaching points.

Teaching tip:Ā Start with simple one-versus-one marking activities before introducing interception challenges and modified games.

šŸŽÆ Lesson 3 – Gameplay & Applying Skills

Our final lesson provides opportunities for pupils to bring their learning together through modified netball games.

Learning focus:

  • Applying passing, catching and footwork skills

  • Creating space and supporting teammates

  • Making effective decisions in possession

  • Applying marking and defending principles

  • Developing teamwork and tactical understanding

  • Understanding and applying basic netball rules

Activities encourage pupils to use the skills developed throughout the unit in realistic game situations.

Teaching tip:Ā Use smaller-sided games to increase pupils’ involvement, maximise opportunities to practise skills and encourage decision-making.

šŸ” Our Approach: Repeat, Refine & Progress

At Transform PE, we encourage teachers to deliver each lesson twice, allowing pupils to consolidate their learning before progressing to new content.

During the first session, pupils explore the activities, develop an understanding of the skills and become familiar with the key teaching points.

When revisiting the lesson, teachers can build on this foundation by introducing additional coaching points, adapting challenges and developing pupils’ understanding further.

Why do we recommend this approach?

1. More time to embed learning

Revisiting activities gives pupils additional opportunities to practise, consolidate and refine their skills, supporting greater confidence and understanding.

2. Increased active learning time

When pupils already understand how activities work, less time is needed for instructions and organisation, creating more opportunities for physical activity and meaningful practice.

3. Reduced planning demands

Teachers become more familiar with the activities and their organisation, allowing them to focus on teaching, observing and supporting pupil progress rather than planning completely new sessions.

4. Greater opportunities for progression

Repeating a lesson doesn’t mean delivering exactly the same content. Teachers can introduce new challenges, layer additional coaching points and adapt activities to meet pupils’ developing needs.

Three lessons. Six PE sessions.

Using this approach, our three-lesson netball sequence can provide six weeks of progressive PE delivery, based on one lesson per week.

šŸ“± Supporting Teachers Through Visual Modelling

At Transform PE, we recognise how important clear demonstrations are in helping pupils understand and develop new skills.

That’s why our teachers bring an iPad into every PE lesson, using visual demonstrations to support the modelling of techniques, activities and key coaching points.

We also encourage pupils to take an active role in this process.

Teachers can hand the iPad to pupils, allowing them to watch demonstrations, identify key teaching points and share their observations with their classmates.

This approach helps us to:

  • Provide clear visual examples of skills and techniques.

  • Support teachers with accurate and confident modelling.

  • Encourage pupils to identify and discuss key coaching points.

  • Develop pupils’ understanding through observation and discussion.

  • Make PE lessons more interactive and pupil-led.

Visual demonstrations complement practical teaching, helping pupils connect what they see with what they’re being asked to perform.
